What does it mean to see clearly the machine you depend on?

A fellowship research project into the legibility of technology — and what changes when a person can actually see what their computer is doing.

You cannot command a machine you cannot see.

Modern computers are deliberately opaque — and a person who cannot tell what their own machine is doing has, in a small way, already surrendered authority over it.

The question Scope investigates is what digital legibility looks like in practice. Not literacy in the abstract, but the concrete experience of opening a window into the device you use all day and understanding what it tells you. Battery state, memory pressure, network traffic, thermal condition, storage consumption — these are not advanced concepts. They are the basic facts of the machine. And yet most personal computers are designed to hide them.

A fellowship researcher at SDIT built Scope to test a simple proposition: what changes when a person can see? The hypothesis is not merely that the computer runs better — it is that the person does. That the habit of looking cultivates a kind of command that has value beyond the technical.

In the age of AI, legibility becomes more important, not less.

As AI systems grow capable of managing more of what our machines do, the temptation will be to treat the device as a black box managed by another black box.

The Institute holds that this is the wrong direction. A person who cannot read their own device cannot evaluate AI outputs about it, cannot detect when something is wrong, and cannot exercise the kind of command that makes technology genuinely an instrument rather than an authority. Knowing why the fans spun up, where the disk went, and who your machine is talking to is a small kind of sovereignty — the kind the age of AI will demand in much larger forms.

Scope is a research instrument as much as a utility. The fellowship researchers of SDIT built it because they believe that digital literacy is not a technical skill. It is a human one — and it begins with being able to see.
