Students are the small in-person circle at SDIT — people who come to the work itself: the workshop, the seminar room, and the water. It is not a degree, and not yet a credential. It is a real education in good company, during the founding.

Places are few. A place here is earned, not bought — show up, and do the work.

The CircleWhat it is

Learning, in person, taken seriously.

A Visitor learns from SDIT online, for free. A Student comes in person. The difference is presence: the seminar you argue in, the board you shape with your hands, the swell you forecast and then paddle out into. The things a person is genuinely drawn to, pursued with rigor, become the most demanding teachers of judgment and taste.

The Student Circle is deliberately small — this is the pedagogy, not a limitation. Four things are held in common:

The Seminar

The Canon read closely and argued openly — text, film, and music as one conversation. You bring a made response, and defend it.

The Workshop

Real things, made with your hands and the region's craft traditions — boards, electronics, instruments, code. Understanding proven by a finished thing.

The Water

Physical culture in the waterman tradition — the ocean as a classroom in physics, courage, and judgment. San Diego is the laboratory.

The Company

A few people from different disciplines who take ideas seriously. You will learn as much from them as from any lesson.

The bar for a place is high — not of résumé, but of seriousness. We are not looking for the most credentialed. We are looking for the most committed: the ones whose presence and energy pull everyone around them forward.

What we can and can't promise.

SDIT is in its founding phase, before accreditation. We are plain about what that means: the Student Circle is a genuine education, but it is not a degree, and it does not yet carry a credential or transferable units.

What it offers instead is rare: to learn at the founding of an institution, shaping it as you go, in a circle small enough that every person matters. Cost is never the deciding factor in who is admitted — if support is needed, say so plainly; it will not work against you.

The ApplicationHow to apply

Every application is read personally.

We use no automated scoring and no keyword filters. Every application is read by a person. Write honestly — we are looking for genuine curiosity and real commitment, not a polished résumé.

Write to us at brandon@sandiegotech.org and answer four questions:

One

Who are you? Your background — personally, intellectually, practically. Don't summarize a résumé. Tell us something true.

Two

What do you want to learn? What are you drawn to, and what would you pursue if you had the room and the company to do it well?

Three

Why in person, why SDIT? What are you looking for here that you haven't found elsewhere?

Four

Something you've made. Optional. A project, a piece of writing, a build, a recording — anything that shows how you work.

What happens next.

First

Your application is read. Every application is reviewed by a person — not an algorithm. We read what you wrote, not merely whether you wrote it.

Then

A conversation, if it is a fit. If we think there is something here, we will reach out to talk. It is not an interview — it is a chance to actually speak.

Either way

A decision, plainly given. If it is a yes, we will work out what your place looks like. If not this circle, we will tell you why, and what might change.
