What does it mean to pay attention when distraction is the product?

A fellowship research project into the human capacity for sustained thought — and whether software can be designed to protect it rather than extract it.

Attention is the precondition of everything the Institute cares about.

Without it, there is no judgment, no craft, no learning, no taste. And yet the dominant model of personal computing is built to divide it — thirty seconds at a time, in service of attention markets.

The question Focus investigates is whether the relationship can be reversed. Not: how do we make people use their phones less? That is a design question with many answers, most of them punitive. The deeper question is: what would software look like if it was built to strengthen the user's capacity for sustained thought rather than mine it? Focus is one answer — the simplest possible instrument for protecting the most fundamental cognitive act: staying in one place long enough to think.

A fellowship researcher at SDIT built it to test a proposition. Productivity software almost always gamifies or surveils. What happens when it does neither? When it has no motive except to be put down?

Focus is a discipline timer for iOS and macOS. Set a daily goal. Press start. Work. That is the whole app.

No streak mechanics, no notifications begging return, no accounts, no feed. Sessions are structured around real cognitive limits. The daily goal compounds quietly over weeks; the record stays private. The entire design exists to put you back into your work, not to keep you inside the software.

In the age of AI, attention is the one resource that cannot scale.

AI can supply information, synthesize arguments, and generate outputs at speed. The scarce thing — the thing that does not scale — is a human being's capacity to bring sustained thought to what results.

To read it slowly. To evaluate it carefully. To integrate it into a judgment that is genuinely one's own. This capacity is not fixed; it is formed, in the hours of deep work that practice makes possible. And it is eroded, quickly and consistently, by the industry built around its extraction.

The research question Focus investigates is whether a piece of software can be designed that makes this harder to lose. The fellowship researchers of SDIT believe it can — and that this is among the most important design problems of the era.
